Swissair Flight 111

Swissair Flight 111 was a scheduled flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. On September 2nd, 1998, the flight took off with 229 passengers and crew on board.

As the flight was cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet, a strange burning odor was detected in the cockpit. The captain and the first officer tried to locate the source of the smell, but they were unsuccessful.

Within minutes, a fire broke out in the cockpit’s ceiling, causing the crew to lose control of the aircraft. The captain declared a Mayday and attempted to make an emergency landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Despite their best efforts, the fire continued to spread, and the aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all passengers and crew on board. The investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical problem in the entertainment system.

The tragedy of Swissair Flight 111 shocked the world, and it remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Canadian history. The memory of the passengers and crew who lost their lives that day will always be remembered, and their families continue to grieve their loss.
