Twice a year, all the agents at the airport had to participate in a bidding process for their job functions. This process was based on seniority, with the most senior agents having the first pick of the available spots.
John, a ramp agent, hated this process. He had been bidding for the same spot for years, but always seemed to be stuck in the same position. He watched as new agents transferred into the department and jumped ahead of him on the seniority list. And to make matters worse, there was always that one guy, Tom, who always seemed to snag the spot that John had his eye on.
The spot was perfect – it had the ideal days off and times. John had been dreaming of getting this spot for years, but it never seemed to be within his reach. He was always just a few spots behind Tom on the list, and he couldn’t understand why.
Finally, the day of the bidding process arrived. John sat nervously in the conference room, staring at the list of available spots. As the seniority numbers were called, he watched as agents picked their spots, one by one.
When it was finally his turn, John’s heart was pounding. He looked down the list, searching for the spot that he wanted. And there it was, right at the bottom. But, to his dismay, Tom’s name was already next to it.
Feeling defeated, John picked another spot, one that he knew wouldn’t be as good. As he walked out of the conference room, he couldn’t help but feel frustrated and disappointed. He couldn’t shake off the feeling that he was stuck in a never-ending cycle of being passed over for the spot he wanted.
John knew that he had to find a way to move up the seniority ladder, but he wasn’t sure how. He knew that he was a good worker, and he deserved a better spot. But for now, he would have to keep bidding, year after year, and hope that one day he would finally get the spot he wanted.
