It was a typical day at the YEG airport in 1982, and Don was manning the CP Air ticketing counter as usual. But little did he know, his co-worker Marilyn had a trick up her sleeve.
Marilyn thought it would be funny to post a sign below the counter, out of Don’s sight, that read “Hi: My name is Don and I’m hard of hearing. Can you please speak Loudly and Slowly. Thank you.”
As customers approached the counter, they followed the sign’s instructions and spoke loudly and slowly to Don, who was left confused and wondering why everyone was talking to him like that.
This went on for quite some time, until Don finally took a break and discovered the sign. With the help of a few of his co-workers, they decided to play a prank on Marilyn. They put her in a stand-up wheelchair, wrapped her in wide bands of clear tape and parked her at one end of the check-in counter. She was left there for quite some time, much to the amusement of her co-workers and customers alike.
Marilyn soon realized the error of her ways and promised to never play such a prank again. Don, on the other hand, couldn’t stop laughing for days, and the story of “Marilyn in the Tape” became legendary at the YEG airport.
