The Headley family, a hard-working West Indian family, runs Hey Mon Airlines, a no-frills airline based in Jamaica. Despite its low budget, the Headleys do everything they can to ensure that their passengers have a pleasant flight experience. Captain Arie, who grew up in Kingston and has had a variety of jobs including a paper route, lawn mowing, and brick laying, is the pilot, baggage handler, ticket agent, head steward, navigator, in-flight chiropractor, and co-pilot. His wife, Hilda, does the laundry and irons clothes in the cabin. Their daughter, Margaret, serves as the stewardess, cook, restroom attendant, rent-a-car agent, air traffic controller, and engine mechanic. The captain’s son, Byron, is known as a “lazy coconut blood clot” by his father and is also employed by Hey Mon Airlines.
Hey Mon Airlines has two classes of service: business class and “Lazy class.” However, the airline is cheap and rundown, and passengers may not be aware of this until they land and find out that the landing gear is broken. The captain and his crew must manually land the plane, the outcome of which is left to the imagination. Despite the challenges, the Headleys and their airline remain committed to providing the best possible service to their passengers, exclaiming “Hey Mon!” as they work tirelessly to make every flight a success.
