The Stanley Cup Surprise: A Baggage Handler’s Encounter with Hockey’s Holy Grail

Working for an airline has its perks, especially if you work in the baggage or cargo areas. One day, while working in baggage, we received a case that was labeled from the Hockey Hall of Fame. We pretty well knew what it could be and our curiosity got the best of us. The case was unlocked and without any locks on it, so we had to take a look inside. To our surprise, we found the holy grail of hockey, The Stanley Cup!

We couldn’t believe it, as it was every Canadian’s dream to hoist the Stanley Cup. None of us were hockey players, but we took the chance of lifting that cup. We took it out of its case and we all started taking pictures with it. We even took it out on the ramp while some ramp agents were working on a flight. It was sitting in a baggage cart upright and while the ramp agents were loading the aircraft, you could see the passengers through their port windows looking at it in awe. Even the pilots were looking at it, in fact they came down on the ramp and wanted to take a picture with it.

All in all, it was an experience we will never forget. We took it back and put it back in the case and we sent it on its way to its destination. We knew it was headed to a special place where it would be appreciated and cherished for its historical significance. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we were privileged to be a part of.
